Quebec houses of worship can resume services as of Monday, but with a maximum of 50 congregants | CTV News

Now that the Province has permitted the reopening of churches, we will start celebrating Weekend Masses in St. Alphonsus Church as of June 27-28. Since we can only allow 50 people into the church building at one time I will celebrate three Masses there instead of the two I had previously announced. They will be on Saturday at 7 pm and Sunday at 10:15 am and 11:15 am. I will continue to celebrate a live-streamed Sunday Mass from St. Joseph’s Church at 9 am each Sunday morning until further notice for those who cannot attend Mass in the Chapeau Church.

Given the small number of people who can attend any one Mass, it will be necessary for you to call the parish IN ADVANCE (819-689-5232) to reserve a place at the Mass of your choosing. Once we reach 50 people for any given Mass, we will not be able to accept any more reservations.

Parishioners will be obliged to wear a mask at all time while in the church building. You will also be asked to wash your hands with Purel upon entering. Social distancing requires that while members of the same household can sit together, there must be at least a six-foot distance maintained from everyone else. Further details will be provided here, on Facebook, and on the phone when you call to reserve a place for any Mass.

For those people who have been waiting to celebrate a funeral/memorial Mass for someone who has recently died, you can speak to the Funeral Home and they will contact us to make arrangements for the service. These services will also be restricted to no more than 50 people with all the same social distancing requirements being strictly observed.

We will resume public Masses in both St. Joseph’s and Sheenboro once the restrictions are further relaxed permitting more people into each celebration.

Your cooperation and patience is anticipated and greatly appreciated.

Fr. Tim Notes:
1) Happy New Year!! Really. No, I mean it… Happy New Year! With the arrival of the 1st Sunday of Advent, we begin a new year in the Church calendar with its own set of Sunday readings and prayers. Just as our civic New Year’s celebrations are usually marked with resolutions and commitments to do things better in the year ahead, so too, we can make similar decisions to rededicate ourselves to better love God and each other in the Church year to come.

One of the best ways that I know of to grow in our commitment to love is to participate in the activities our parishes offer us. Activities such as our Eucharistic Adoration programs and our Adult Catechism courses. Adoring Christ in the Blessed Sacrament deepens our love for him as well as permitting him to furrow deeper into our hearts, minds, and souls to help us grow more rooted in our faith. Learning anew what the Church teaches helps us to more faithfully live out our obligations to each other as well as strengthening our commitment to God. Both activities serve to help us better live our lives as practicing, witnessing Catholic Christians.

Why not open yourself up to the possibility of growing in your knowledge and devotion by resolving to participate in one or both of these activities? Spending an extra hour each week with God will pay rich dividends now and, in the life to come. It’s a small price to pay for what is promised to be a great prize at the end of our days when we encounter Christ face to face.

2) The St. Joseph’s Eucharistic Adoration begins this week! The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on Thursday and Friday evenings from 7 pm to 8 pm.

3) Congratulations to Rikki-Lee and Matt Allard whose baby Emersyn Loretta Lois was baptized last Sunday in Chapeau.

4) Regarding the children’s catechism program: If your child still has not picked up their required workbooks for their class you can obtain it from Pauline at the Parish office during office hours. As it has been, the cost remains $10.00 to obtain their workbook.   Mass attendance is a REQUIRED component of the program and children must get their attendance sheet signed after Mass in the sacristy.  The next Catechism class will be held on Sunday, December 1st at 9:15 a.m. at D.W.K.S.  Thank you!

Notes from Fr. Tim:
1) Please pray for the repose of soul for Mrs. Beatrice (Bea) Battis (nee Conroy) who passed away at the nursing home in Fort Coulonge on Thursday. The arrangements for her funeral have yet to be finalized but will be posted on the parish website ( once they are made.

2) Congratulations to Fiona Brennan, infant daughter of Jessica Kelly and Richard Brennan who was baptized in St. Joseph Church last Sunday. May she live a long life of faith and joy.

3) The financial statement of our revenues and expenses are available in each of the churches this weekend. A copy will be posted on the bulletin board at the entrances and others available for you to take one home. You will note that all the parishes are running a deficit at this point in the year. This is because: a) repairs that have been done to the rectory and churches, and b) the high oil bills that came from the endless winter of 2017-18. It isn’t a great concern though since we traditionally receive more revenue and fewer expenses in the 2nd half of each year. We were in a similar state at this point last year as well and yet each of the parishes ended the year in good shape. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to speak to me about them. If I don’t have the answer right away, I will research it and reply asap. I thank everyone very much for your generous financial support of each of the parishes.

4) The annual Parish Draw tickets for St. Alphonsus will be available beginning this week. Once again the prizes are a homemade quilt and various cash prizes. This is an important component of the revenues we generate as part of our Parish Supper so we ask that each family either sell or purchase 10 books. Thank you for your continued assistance in this annual fundraising effort.

5) Once again this weekend there will be strawberries for sale on the grounds of the Chapeau Gallery after the 10:30 am Mass with the proceeds going to support our Peruvian carpenter’s school project. Don’t be tardy in getting to the tent if you want to make a purchase as last week all the strawberries sold out very quickly!

6) Jesus sends out his disciples to spread the good news of the Kingdom in today’s gospel passage. If we want to be considered among his followers (and thus inherit the promised eternal life he offers) he expects us to do the same. So what have you done this week to accomplish that same end?

The Sheenboro Parish Council chose the St. Bryce Mission in Costa Rica as our parish’s cause to help mothers and their infants. This mission helps the Cabecar indigenous people at the St. Francis Emmaus Center is located in Turrialba, Costa Rica, the nearest city to the Chirripo indigenous reservation. According to the mission’s website: “The center, modeled off the internationally-lauded model of “pregnancy waiting homes”, provides a safe, comfortable place for up to 30 Cabecar mothers, who must journey long hours on foot to have access to medical care, in the days before and after the birth of a child or in the event of the hospitalization of a child.” Because of the lack of access to medical services and harsh living conditions, the Cabecar population suffers infant and maternal mortality rates nearly 5 times higher than the rest of the Costa Rican population. However, annually, 400 mothers visit the centre and the medical help has reduced infant mortality by 50%. For more information, please see Please watch Fr. Tim’s and the parish blog, as he will be posting informational videos about St. Bryce Mission.

Notes from Fr. Tim
1) Our sympathy goes out to the family of Lillian Smiley who passed away this week. It is difficult at the best of times to with deal with the death of a parent, but it’s even more so when it comes during a festive season. Please keep her family in your prayers.

2) I am sad to announce too the death of Michael Nadeau, son of the late Acey and Mary Nadeau of Chapeau at the young age of 56. His funeral will be celebrated in Pennsylvania, USA this coming week. Michael is the brother of Rosemary Ferrigan of Chapeau. Please pray for the comfort of his wife, daughter, and siblings.

3) Have you brought your decorations for our Trees of Life yet? These trees are intended to help us remember and celebrate the people and events in our family life. If you have not yet taken some home to personalize and decorate, please do so and return them to the church so that they can be added to the tree in your church.

4) Here are the Christmas Mass times for this year:
