Notes from Fr. Tim
1) Attention Chapeau parishioners: I’ve had some questions come my way about the construction and repair projects so I’ve decided to answer them here.

i) Why do we need to raise at least $800,000 over the next few years? Well, first off the cost of the side entrance project is $400,000 plus taxes. We are obliged to pay all of this amount as it did not qualify for any government support – save for one small amount that will be announced later. We had $200,000 in the bank from the sale of the properties in Desjardinsville and Nichabeau so that leaves us with $300,000 to raise right there. Next, the repair to the stonework on the church has been estimated to cost no less than $1,300,000. Thankfully the provincial government is picking up approximately 70% of that cost. That means that we will have to pay at least $390,000 to have the work completed. Then you need to add the architect’s fees, engineering fees, government permits, all of which will run well north of $20,000. Finally, there are the repairs to sidewalks and parking lot, electrical work, and other assorted items demanded by our insurance company. These have already cost more than $15,000 and we are only about half-way through the list of required work needed to keep our fire and liability coverage. So if we are lucky, we will be able to get everything done over the next four or five years at a cost to the parish of no less than the $800,000 figure I quoted in Church with the province picking up the balance.

ii) Why didn’t we hire local contractors for the side entrance project? EVERY LICENCED LOCAL CONTRACTOR was invited to bid on this project. None of them chose to do so. That’s why the contract went with a company from Bryson, QC. as they were the least expensive tender we received.

iii) Why didn’t we use volunteers to do the work in building the new side entrance? That’s simple to answer. It’s illegal to do so in the province of Quebec unless every volunteer holds the required trade permit to do the job. Since that was a practical impossibility we had to go with a licensed contractor for the job.

Hope these answer help to give you the information people were looking for.

2) We welcome Bishop Mulhall to celebrate Mass this weekend. I am very grateful for his willingness to step in at the last minute as my replacement so that I could go on my scheduled retreat. Please remember that Fr. Tom and Fr. Costello had been engaged to replace me but due to health problems, they could not do it. I have been able to change my flights so that I will get back home at 4 am next Sunday morning. So you will have a bleary-eyed, jet-lagged priest as a celebrant… but at least there will be Mass in both St. Joseph’s and Chapeau next weekend. (P.S. You can look forward to a very short homily!!)

3) The 2016 Tax receipts will be available in two weeks. Pauline is printing them up while I am gone and I will sign then once I’m back to work after the retreat.

4) Don’t forget to say a prayer for me during my retreat week. I promise to remember you each time I celebrate Mass and pray every day that I’m gone for everyone’s intentions.
